CLASSIC CHOQUEQUIRAO TREK 4D/3N

Choquequirao Trek, Choquekiraw known as ‘cradle of gold’ is a dispersed archaeological complex located in the Vilcabamba mountain range at 3.033 meters above sea level, which is perfect for those who want to explore the Andes and its magnificent views of the beautiful landscape and flora and fauna.

It is an ideal place for many tourists who are interested in learning more about the lost city of the Incas. Please note: This trek does not go to Machu Picchu.

DESCRIPTION

Choquequirao Trek, Choquekiraw known as ‘cradle of gold’ is a dispersed archaeological complex located in the Vilcabamba mountain range at 3.033 meters above sea level, which is perfect for those who want to explore the Andes and its magnificent views of the beautiful landscape and flora and fauna.

It is an ideal place for many tourists who are interested in learning more about the lost city of the Incas. Please note: This trek does not go to Machu Picchu.

DETAILED ITINEARY

Day 1: CUSCO – CACHORA – CHIK’ISCCA – CAPULIYOC

We will meet you at your hotel at 4.00 am then drive for 3.5 hours to Cachora village where we will have breakfast and prepare our bags before we begin the hike. The first 2 hours hike will be along a beautiful, descending path with spectacular views of the valley and river. The path is surrounded by lovely flowers and plants such as begonias, orchids, cacti and some rare local birds. Once we arrive to Capuliyoc 2.900 meters above sea level (lookout point), we will have the privilege to see spectacular views of Padrayoc snowcapped mountain (5.400 meters). At this point we will have some time to enjoy our snacks and take plenty of pictures of the Apurimac canyon and the river below. We will then descend through a unique zigzag path for 2 hours and around 2 pm when we will have lunch. Here you have time to relax, put your feet up for a bit and have some refreshing tea before continuing the hike for a further 2 hours. If all goes well, we will reach the campsite by 5 pm and spend the rest of the day and night at 1.800 meters.

Our total hiking time will be 6 to 7 hours approx.

Day 2: LA PLAYA – MARAMPATA – CHOQUEK’IRAW

After breakfast, we will begin a steep 2 hour climb to Santa Rosa (2095 meters high) where we will have time to take a refreshing break, rest and buy some water. Then we will continue for another 2 hours towards Marampata (3,000 m). A flat area where we can rest and enjoy splendid views of Apurimac canyon and the famous Inca site of choquequirao. Here we will have lunch and take advantage of the facilities (toilets and wash room). We will then continue to hike for another two hours to reach the campsite which is located just outside of the Inca site (at 3,033 meters high). It is important to leave all our belongings in our tents so that we can spend the evening in the ruins hands free. Then from here we can watch the amazing sunset and possibly see some condors flying nearby.

Camping at Choquequirao campsite (bathrooms and cold water showers are available).

Day 3: CHOQUEQUIRAO – MARAMPATA – LA PLAYA

After an early breakfast we will visit the mysterious Inca site of Choquekiraw where our professional tour guide will explain about the history of the site. Our guide will take you to the most important parts of the Inca ruins such as the main plaza, Upper choquek’iraw, ceremonial sector and the famous Llama sector where Incas represented the sacred animal on their buildings. Then after the tour, you will have extra time to explore and enjoy the scenery before heading off to the campsite for lunch break. On the return to marampata you will see some spectacular views of the canyon with its various flowers, orchids and different types of birds local to the area. After a 4 hour walk downhill we will reach a campsite called La playa (1500 meters above sea level ) where you are going to spend a night beside the famous Apurimac river ( ‘speak god’ ).

Day 4: LA PLAYA – CAPULIYOC – CACHORA- CUSCO

You will be leaving the camp site very early in the morning to arrive back in Cusco by the evening. The first part of this day is uphill for 4 hours to Capuliyoc. This is a once in a lifetime trek through the beautiful mountains where you can see spectacular views of snowcapped mountains in Padrayoc (5400m, and Salcantay 6200m), If the weather permits, And the valley warms up just enough when the sun starts to rise, we will have the opportunity to see some condors and eagles flying above us. This will be our last stop over where we will have our outdoor lunch and hike 2 more hours to get to Cachora where we will say our farewell to our horses and men who carried all our belongings along the way.

Afterwards, we will board our bus back to Cusco.
